Who: Aged 3-6-year-old boys & girls from Saskatoon and surrounding area. 

What: Learning football fundamentals through a variety of skill stations and activities. We create groups of 8-10 participants with 2 coaches per group for a proper player to coach ratio. We begin with a fundamental movement warm-up and circuit through 5 stations and finish with a cool down stretch. Our main focus is fun and skill development. 

When: Sunday's in May & June

Where: Practices will be at SMF Field or Cumberland Park (8th Street and Cumberland).

Why: For youth to get active, healthy, learn football skills and have fun. We emphasize skill development, player safety, and football fundamentals. We teach the importance participation and cooperation. Our coaches do a great job creating positive and fun football experience for all our participants.

Cost: $100 - Additional late fees will start on April 1st, 2019.

Cancellation Policy:

We have a $50 admin fee for removal of all players.


The Tykes on Spikes program is the newest addition to the Saskatoon Minor Football offerings. This program is in it's 4th year and is an introduction to Foundational Movement Skills and Fundamental Football Skills. We use a fun collection of games and activities that keep youngsters active and instil a love of sport and football. This is a learn to play program and will be offered to any three, four or five-year-old boy or girl looking develop football skills and fundamentals. The program will consist of five sessions held on Sundays in May and June at SMF Field. Our practices teach skills like carrying, catching, and throwing the football as well as flagging, running, jumping, and moving the body with speed, balance and control. We will coach in a progressive manner building on a week-to-week basis with our main focus on having fun!!

Practices: There will be 5 groups of 8-10 Tykes starting at either 9:00 am, 10:00 am or 11:00 am. Each practice will consist of a warm-up and participating in five football fundamental skill stations. Each group will rotate from station to station learning skills through football drills. We will finish with a cool down stretch.

All practices will be 55-60 minutes in length.

Your young football players will be coached by current or past high school, Hilltop, Huskie, or Valkyrie football players.


We will be emailing all participants on in early May with group colours and times. If you have any requests or time preference email


Equipment: The only equipment a participant needs is a pair of running shoes, soccer or football cleats. We will be giving out player t-shirts at the first practice so please arrive 15 minutes early to your session. We will email each group with their time and jersey colour in late April!


Lead Instructor:

Matt Yausie will be leading these sessions with the help of current High School, Hilltop, Huskie, & Valkyrie players. Matt has a lifetime of football playing and coaching experience. He has coached in the SMF league in both flag and tackle, as well as in the KFL, CIS and currently coaches with Aden Bowman Senior Football Team and The Saskatoon Hilltops. Matt is certified by Football Canada as a Master Learning Facilitator for Intro to Competition in Flag Football, has a Kinesiology degree and Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist designation.
